Arsenal
Petr Cech – 5
Cech continues to look like a shadow of his former years as the Chelsea number one. He looks slow with the ball at his feet and looks very weak when coming for crosses. Fortunately for him, he kept a clean sheet even after allowing Arnautovic a clear shot at an open goal after failing to punch the ball out of relevance.
Hector Bellerin – 6
Bellerin may not have offered a lot going forward, but defended very well against Masuaku who has had some joy recently against both Manchester City and Chelsea.
Laurent Koscielny – 5
Koscielny almost cost his team all 3 points with a horrific pass across goal with just a minute left of the 90. Luckily he was spared his blushes and kept a clean sheet, but the veteran still doesn’t look as solid as he used to be.
Nacho Monreal – 6
Playing in a back four at centre back - something he hasn’t done very often - Monreal put in a very solid performance. The Spaniard reads the play well and showed his strength despite his size.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 8
Making his first Premier League start, Maitland-Niles filled in brilliantly at left-back. Usually, for the U23’s, he is deployed as a central midfielder, but his opportunities in the first team have come at fullback. He put in some great deliveries, defended well and was one of Arsenal’s only positives from a poor result.
Granit Xhaka – 5
Once again, Xhaka failed to perform in midfield. His passing at times was sloppy, and he continues to look shaky when it comes to making tackles and defending.
Jack Wilshere – 8
Wilshere, making his first Arsenal start for 577 days, put in a very good performance in midfield. The Englishman turned West Ham’s midfield on numerous occasions and put on an excellent passing display.
Alex Iwobi – 7
Iwobi was by far Arsenal’s most creative player in the first half and looked the most likely to create a goal despite the small amount of space West Ham were affording to the Gunners. He slightly dropped off in the second half and was taken off but he put in a good performance on his return to the line-up.
Mesut Ozil – 6
Ozil looked to create all evening, but with West Ham putting in such a solid defensive display, the German simply couldn’t break them down with his passing.
Alexis Sanchez – 5
The Chilean has looked poor for weeks, and this was his worst performance yet. He was only taken off with eight minutes to go, but he should have been off much sooner.
Olivier Giroud – 5
The Frenchman did not have great service all evening, but he looked flat footed and struggled to link up as well as Lacazette has playing as Arsenal’s main striker all season. Given an opportunity after his equaliser at Southampton on Saturday, Giroud did not take advantage of it.
Subs:
Danny Welbeck – 5
Welbeck was introduced to be a game changer, but the Englishman failed to make any impact, apart from winning a freekick in the final seconds.
Alexandre Lacazette – N/A
It was hardly surprising that Lacazette didn’t start with some rotation expected. But to bring him on with just eight minutes to play at 0-0 was an interesting decision from Wenger. It proved costly as he had no time to score the decisive goal.
