Crystal Palace vs Manchester United: Why Chris Smalling will be more vital than Juan Mata

It’s getting to the point where even some rival fans are beginning to feel sorry for David Moyes as the results continue to go against him and players who’d previously looked like champions suddenly look anything but. Defensively Moyes has seen something of a merry-go-round as Rio Ferdinand’s age appears to be catching up with him, the departing Nemanja Vidic struggles with injuries and Rafael’s form seems to have deserted him. The United boss has tried a combination of centre-back pairings and even been forced to try different personnel at right-back, with only Patrice Evra pretty much a mainstay of the Red defence.

It’s no surprise the Champions are looking vulnerable at the back with so many changes in the back line each week and every defender seemingly suffering from either lack of form, youth or fitness. One player who’s been heavily relied upon by Moyes is Chris Smalling and the trip to Selhurst Park this weekend for the champions should be another example of why the former Fulham man is now one of United’s most dependable defenders.

Smalling has managed more appearances than any other Red defender bar Evra and has filled in at both right-back and in the heart of the defence when called upon.

Although being a regular in United’s defence is hardly anything to be proud of this season, it’s worth noting that of the champions eight defeats in the league, Smalling has only been present for five of them- whilst not exactly awe-inspiring at least gives makes him less culpable than others for United’s current predicament.

Smalling may not be the finished article as a defender but lately his performances have been cause for if perhaps not celebration then maybe it at least a modicum of relief for Moyes. Smalling’s tackling has been more impressive than some of his more experienced team mates.

The term ‘reliable defender’ is almost becoming an alien concept for Moyes this season but if he is to harbour any ambitions of reaching that unlikely fourth spot, then Smalling is someone who could prove vital, starting with the game away at Crystal Palace. Tony Pulis has got the Eagles – while not quite soaring at least playing with confidence and three wins in their last four games is the sort of form Moyes will be dreaming of. Smalling could prove essential to United this Saturday, most likely from the centre of defence, as the Reds attempt to put their recent run of two points from a possible nine behind them.
