Mid-week fixtures usually prove to be tricky as teams jostle with injuries and fitness issues. With the league entering an all-important phase where the top 6 teams jostle for Champions League Qualification and Liverpool and Manchester City compete in an intense Premier League title race, the gameweek promised much and delivered as well.
The biggest result came for Chelsea as they comprehensively beat North London rivals Tottenham to close in on the gap between either team. A Pedro strike and a Trippier own goal were enough for the blues to see off their counterparts in a match where head coach Maurizio Sarri dropped his first-team keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga after the player's refusal to come off in Chelsea's league cup final loss over the weekend.
It's not a bad time to be a Liverpool fan at the moment as the Reds thumped Europa hopefuls Watford 5-0. After some abject displays in their previous games, Jurgen Klopp's charges didn't hold back this time as a double each from Virgil Van Dijk and Sadio Mane caught the headlines. 3 assists from Alexander Trent-Arnold and 2 from Andrew Robertson complete a fine evening for the Premier League leaders.
Another top team was responsible for a 5-goal haul as Arsenal stormed past over-achieving Bournemouth. The cherries have been having a great season but couldn't handle the gunners as Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette, Mkhitaryan, and Koscielny were all among the goals. The result takes Arsenal to 4th place in the Premier League table just 4 points behind derby rivals, Tottenham.
Manchester United navigated a tricky fixture as they visited the Crystal Palace having a few key players out with injuries. A Romelu Lukaku double and Ashley young strike ensured that the first-teamers weren't missed as the reds sailed away to a 3-1 win and stay in contention for the Champions League spots.
Manchester City needed graft and effort to overcome West Ham United as Aguero's penalty strike proved to be the difference maker in the end. The sky blues keep the title race alive as they sit only 1 point behind Premier League leaders, Liverpool.
