Manchester City comfortably won against QPR in a rematch of their last year’s title deciding cliffhanger whileManchester United came from behind to break Southampton’s heart in ‘Fergie Time’ yet again. Liverpool crashed to a defeat at the hands of a slick Arsenal while Andy Carroll who was loaned out to West Ham helped his side secure a 3-0 win before getting injured. Swansea and Everton were unable to keep up their impressive starts ensuring Chelsea held on to to the top spot. Here’s the team of the week:
Brad Friedel (GK) - Age is just a number. The 41-year stopper reacted to Tottenham signing Hugo Lloris in the best possible way, notching up an impressive performance against an inspired Norwich side. Producing some stunning saves, he almost single-handedly helped poor Spurs notch up a point.
Per Mertesacker (CB) - After taking a bit of time to settle in EPL, the big German defender has gone on to develop a fine partnership with Thomas Vermaelen. He was rock solid again against Liverpool, keeping them quiet for most of the game and helped himself to a 3rd consecutive clean sheet.
Ciaran Clark (CB) - The Aston Villa centerback was quite impressive against Newcastle this weekend keeping the dangerous duo of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba at bay. He also scored the vital goal which helped his side garner their first point of the season after two consecutive losses.
Gareth Mcauley (CB) - The Northern Ireland captain was reassuringly solid at the back against Everton dealing with the aerial threat of Felliani and Jelavic. To top it off he also scored a goal which helped the Baggies maintain their impressive start to the season.
Hatem Ben Arfa (LW) - The Frenchman has been hugely impressive in recent times and showed his class again this weekend. He curled in an unstoppable 25 yard effort to lift up a below par Newcastle side against Aston Villa and salvage a point for his side.
Santi Cazorla (CM) - After showing glimpses of his quality in the last weeks the Spainard rose to the occasion against Liverpool. He helped Arsenal dominate the midfield setting up Podolski first goal and also scored to open his Premier League account. He already looks like a class act.
Yaya Toure (CM) - With David Silva off to an unusually quiet start this season the burden of carrying the midfield has fallen on Yaya Toure. He was a towering influence on the game and steered the champions to a comfortable win scoring the opening goal against QPR.
Robert Snodgrass (RM) - The Norwich winger had an impressive outing at the White Hart Lane. He was a constant menace on the right hand side with his tireless runs. Fittingly he beat the impressive Friedel with a low finish to earn his side a deserved draw and open his premier league account.
Carlos Tevez (FW) - The Argentine has been playing well since his return from the self imposed exile and was again in top form against QPR. He had a hand in all of the 3 goals scoring one and setting up other two to ensure their won’t be a repeat of drama of the last time these two teams met.
Steven Fletcher (FW) - Signed for 14 million, the former Wolves striker began repaying his fees with a classy performance against Swansea. Scoring two vitals goals on his debut he silenced his doubters and showed that he belongs in the top flight of Premier League.
Robin Van Persie (FW) - Apart from his cheeky penalty miss,’The Flying Dutchman’ was in majestic form against Southampton. He scored a brilliant hat-trick helping his side overcome a dogged Saints. If only Fergie can find a way to accommodate him and Rooney in the same side.
