EPL Transfers: Six Deals Of 'Smart Business' This Season

In today’s world, teams do not hesitate to spend millions and go overboard to sign a player in order to strenghthen the squad.

We, have seen teams splashing out a huge amount of money for a single player like Manchester City, who recently signed Sergio Aguero for £38 Million, Liverpool who spent nearly £40 Million for Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, Manchester United who spent about £18 Million on David de Gea and about £17 Million for the young defender Phil Jones. We also saw Chelsea spend a whopping £50 Million for Fernando Torres in January.

All these signings are done with a belief that the returns from the players will be much more than the money spent, but sometimes, the players fail to deliver and live up to the mark of their price tag.

Among these HUGE signings are some signings in which the money involved might be small, but the returns the teams get in the long run are huge.

Let’s have a look at the ‘Smart Business’ done this season:

Gervinho:

Arsenal signed this Ivorian forward from French side, Lille for just £10.5 Million. Yeah, 10.5 Million does not seem like ‘just’ but looking at his potential and ability, his performances will eclipse the amount given and in the inflated market this is a good deal to get such an amount of talent.

The young lad scored two goals in his Arsenal debut against FC Koln. And going by his past record in Lille (18 Goals and 10 assists in 53 appearances) Gervinho can become an excellent signing for Arsene Wenger.

Speed, dribbling skills, beating the defenders, passing and an eye for goal makes Gervinho a good signing for a reasonable amount.

Connor Wickham:

Connor Wickham

Sunderland signed this 18 year old striker from Ipswich Town for £ 8,100,000. Now, again, this amount for an 18 year old might raise some eyebrows, but looking at his statistics and performances at both club and International level justifies the amount given.

Wickham found the net 13 times in 65 appearances for Ipswich Town and has played for England at U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-21 level. He scored 9 goals in 13 appearances in the England U-17 team.

His pace and finishing quality is fantastic at such a young age. He will certainly be one of the players to watch out for in the next season.

Sunderland have completed a smart deal by signing this young talent who is considered the future of England’s strikeforce.

Oriol Romeu:

Chelsea recently signed this 19 year old Defensive midfielder for £ 4,350,000 from Barcelona. Michael Essien is injured and expected to be out for the most of the season, this guarantees Oriol plenty of first team action in the next season.

The Spanish player started his career in Espanyol’s youth academy but later joined Barcelona’s youth set up and has played a lot of matches for Barcelona B.

The fact that he comes from a great youth set up of Barcelona who are famous for developing players is in itself an incentive and the amount paid is not that huge in today’s transfer market.

However, as usual, Barcelona included a buy back clause of £10 million to £ 15 million which could see the Spanish go back to the Catalan side. But for now he is there to add some firepower in the Blues’ midfield.

Souleymane Coulibaly:

Tottenham Hotspur signed this young and raw forward for around £2 Million. Harry Redknapp, known for his eye for talent decided to sign this 16 year old following his magical performances in FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The teenager scored a whopping 9 goals in just 4 appearances for Cote d’Ivoire and quite rightly won the Golden boot award.

This young lad, termed as ‘The next Didier Drogba’ can go on and become one of the greatest signings ever, if he reaches his full potential.

Demba Ba:

Newcastle United grabbed this 26 year old striker for free after his contract expired at West Ham and he refused to sign a new contract with the relegated side.

Ba was quite a revelation in his last season, scoring 7 goals in 12 appearances for West Ham, doing as much as he could to save them from relegation.

Newcastle United were quick to grab this talented striker for free and he could go on and become a great signing for Newcastle in the future as the Premier League has already seen what he is capable of.

Charles N’Zogbia:

Charles N'Zogbia

Charles N’Zogbia was signed by Aston Villa from Wigan Athletic for £9 million.

Aston Villa signed Charles to add to their wingers because of recent sale of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing.

N’Zogbia has also featured for Newcastle United. His speed and perfect crosses are well known in the premier league and he is the perfect replacement for the out going wingers from Aston Villa.

At the age of 25 the amount given and the potential of the player is another great signing by Aston Villa.

These were some signings which could become the top ones in the near future or in the long run. The teams would definitely get the value for the money paid; as for the question of when and where, we’ll have to wait and watch.

There were some more good signings but the money involved and the expected returns does not go hand in hand.

AND, the transfer window is still open, if you want your team’s name here, wake up the scout and start rolling.
