#6 Switzerland beat France at Euro 2020, reach the quarter-final of a major tournament for the first time in 67 years
In one of the most entertaining games of Euro 2020, Switzerland beat reigning world champions France in a penalty shootout after a six-goal thriller in Bucharest. Trailing 1-3 with 15 minutes to go, Haris Seferovic scored his second goal of the night before Mario Gavranovic struck from outside the box to force extra time.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Switzerland scored each of their five penalties, but Kylian Mbappe saw his spot-kick saved by Yann Sommer to confirm Les Bleus' elimination.
The result marked Switzerland's first quarter-final at a major tournament in 67 years. They made the last-eight on home soil at the 1954 World Cup but lost to Austria in a dramatic 12-goal thriller.
Switzerland will meet Spain for a place in the Euro 2020 semi-final.
#5 Croatia-Spain produce the second-highest-scoring match in European Championships history
Spain and Croatia produced an all-time European Championship classic when they met in Copenhagen for a place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
After Croatia took the lead against the run of play, courtesy of a bizarre own goal, Spain responded with three goals to lead 3-1 in the 85th minute. But Mislav Orsic halved the deficit before Mario Pasalic scored in the 92nd minute to force extra time.
A shell-shocked Spain responded decisively in extra time, though, with Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal scoring without reply to eliminate the 2018 FIFA World Cup finalists. La Furia Roja could have added further gloss to the scoreline but hit the woodwork in the dying moments of the game.
With eight goals, Croatia-Spain marked the second-highest goalscoring match in European Championship history. In the competition's inaugural edition, Yugoslavia beat France 5-4, which remains the highest-scoring match in the competition.
Spain will now take on Switzerland in St. Petersburg for a place in the Euro 2020 semi-final.
#4 Pedri scores the longest-ever own goal in European Championship history
Staying with the Spain-Croatia game, it was La Furia Roja who dominated the game's opening exchanges when Pedri, under pressure from Croatia players, played out a seemingly innocuous back pass to his goalkeeper.
However, Unai Simon barely made contact with the ball and watched helplessly as the ball trickled into his own net. By all accounts, that was Simon's own goal, as the pass should have been comfortably sent upfield by the goalkeeper.
That marked the longest own goal scored at the European Championship and the first from outside the box.
Despite the setback, Spain regrouped and eventually hung on for a dramatic win to reach the Euro 2020 semi-final.
