Chelsea played out a disappointing 0-0 draw with Everton in the Premier League on Sunday, December 22, at Goodison Park. It also ended the Blues' five-game winning run in the competition.
Coming in as favorites after their recent spate of results, the Blues were dominant throughout, holding a lion's share of possession and posing immense threat on the break.
However, the Toffees custodian Jordan Pickford stepped up to the plate and made a series of big saves to deny their in-form visitors, including a brilliant stop on Malo Gusto in the 32nd minute.
The home side had their chances too, with Orel Mangala and Iliman Ndiaye both getting close, but were denied by last-minute interventions.
The draw was Everton's second in row and they remain in 15th place with 16 points from as many games. By contrast, Chelsea are up in second with 35, but may lose further ground on leaders Liverpool, should the latter beat Tottenham Hotspur tonight.
Chelsea Player Ratings
Robert Sanchez - 7.5
The Chelsea custodian made four saves in the game to frustrate the Toffees. The highlight was a key save on Jack Harrison when he attempted a shot from a tight angle, but Sanchez closed him down and smothered his effort.
Axel Disasi - 7
Disasi came in for Marc Cucurella, who was suspended from tonight's clash for his red card in Chelsea's last top-flight encounter. He was a reliable figure in defense, providing a sense of calmness and stability.
Tosin Adarabioyo - 7.5
A solid figure at the heart of Chelsea's defense, Adarabioyo made five clearances and three tackles. He was also keen to regain possession and hounded Everton players for it. The 27-year-old won five of his six ground duels and looked strong in the air too.
Levi Colwill - 6.5
Colwill passed the ball around well but defensively, he came up short as the defender struggled to get involved in the proceedings.
Malo Gusto - 7
Gusto made his presence felt at both ends of the field. He kept the Everton wingers under check on his side of the flank, while also getting forward on occasions to help out offensively.
Moises Caicedo - 7.5
The Ecuadorian was immense to Chelsea's backline today. He read the game brilliantly and was always in the right place at the right time to intervene in the face of impending danger. Caicedo registered three clearances and two tackles.
Enzo Fernandez - 8
Chelsea's midfield maestro was at it again, pulling the strings for his side with aplomb. His passing range was key to splitting the Everton defense open and Fernandez also stood over a couple of set-pieces.
Pedro Neto - 6.5
The winger made a few crosses to support his attacking cohorts, but none came to fruition. He also struggled to win his duels tonight, ending up on the losing side eight times.
Cole Palmer - 8
Once again an instrumental figure in attack for Chelsea with his creativity, vision and devastating linkups. Palmer made three key passes, six crosses and won six of his 12 ground duels too. Unfortunately for the side, he was unable to top it off with a goal.
Jadon Sancho - 7.5
Sancho demonstrated his incredible ball-winning capabilities, winning 10 of his 16 ground duels while also timing his tackles to perfection. Everton struggled to cope with his precocious dribbling skills too.
Nicolas Jackson - 6
The Senegalese ace made a few efforts, but they lacked venom as the Everton goalkeeper was able to stop them. Far from his best.
Substitutes
Christopher Nkunku - 6.5
The Frenchman was sent in to bolster Chelsea's attacking lineup, but ended up disappointing big-time.
Noni Madueke - 6
Madueke struggled to get involved much. His attempts at duels were poor too.
