Roberto Martinez is keen to increase the size of Everton’s squad over the prospect of playing in Europe next season. Everton lie 5th in the Premier league standings with 69 points and a chance of Champions League qualification. However at the moment, the club seems primed for Europa League football in the upcoming season.
“It’s not about improving the squad, it’s about increasing” said Martinez. “When you are playing in Europe you need six or seven new players. That’s the reality and we will do that. I get excited about bringing new players in. You need fresh blood.”
“I’m excited about the players we have and the football we’ve played this season has been phenomenal.
“I think we’re on the right path with the right people, it’s just an adventure that we need to carry on growing and experiencing.”
However Martinez also acknowledged the fact that several significant contributors in the squad were set to leave. They include Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu, Gareth Barry and Lacina Traore, who were all loaned to the Toffees this season.
“Every summer is busy. We signed 10 players in the previous two windows and that’s what you expect from window to window.
“I never worry about losing players. It’s the opposite – I get excited about bringing new players in. You need fresh blood.
“We’ve got incredible senior players at this club. You’ve got Tim Howard, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Leon Osman, James McCarthy – those players hold the dressing room together.
“(But) we need fresh talent. Fresh additions help the team.”
