The 1995 Ballon d'Or winner is set to become the president of Liberia, as the elections come to an end. According to statistics from the National Elections Commission, 98.1% of the ballots were counted and George Weah had secure 61.5% of the votes.
However, this isn't the first time that the famous forward with 193 goals to his belt has tried to become president. George Weah had previously stood for the presidential election in 2005, but lost to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
George Weah posted a statement on Twitter, which received over 15,000 likes and 6,000 retweets:
My fellow Liberians, I deeply feel the emotion of all the nation. I measure the importance and the responsibility of the immense task which I embrace today. Change is on."
George Weah is one of Africa's most decorated players, even players like Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure or Samuel Eto'o have not achieved what the ex-A.C. Milan striker has - having won the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or - both of which were awarded to him in 1995.
George Weah's football career
The 51-year-old won ten collective trophies throughout his football career and earned 24 individual honours playing across 11 different clubs in five different continents. His most memorable career highlight was the 1995/1996 season - when he won the Serie A in his first stint at A.C. Milan and finished as the club's top goal scorer. During his time at the Italian giants, he won twelve individual honours and two Serie A league titles. Apart from finishing as top scorer for the Italian giants during his first spell, he finished as the UEFA Champions League top goalscorer with seven goals a season eariler with Paris Saint-Germain.
