Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, due to depart the club as his contract terminates, has emerged as a surprise target for Serie A side AC Milan.
Eto’o, 33, is currently with the Cameroon squad in Brazil, although the captain only played in one of his country’s matches. The campaign has been a disaster, with infighting common in the Cameroonian camp throughout the tournament.
The move is being reported by Sky Sports Italia and has come as a surprise, mainly because of Eto’o's history as a player for Milan’s arch rivals Inter.
Eto’o played for Inter Milan for two seasons between 2009 and 2011, scoring 53 goals in 101 games as he helped Inter to a historic treble.
After leaving Inter he joined Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala before spending last season on the books of Premier League side Chelsea.
Despite being presented with the opportunity to work with former boss Jose Mourinho, under whom he had so much success, Eto’o's times in London was generally unhappy, with his most memorable moment being a hat-trick against rivals Manchester United.
He is now available on a free transfer, and it is believed that once Cameroon leave Brazil, Milan will invite Eto’o to visit the club ahead of contract talks.
With nine league goals last season, Samuel Eto’o was Chelsea’s highest scoring striker.
