Robin van Persie scored twice against Wigan Athletic as Manchester United eased to a two-nil win in the Community Shield.

After an indifferent pre-season, David Moyes – who has the enviable task of succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson – earned his first piece of silverware but was quick to credit his predecessor for the win in the season’s curtain-raiser.

“I class that as another piece of silverware for Sir Alex,” Moyes said in his post-game press conference.

“I was in charge of the team today but it’s a reward for winning the Premier League under Sir Alex last season and I won’t take too much credit for it.”

Dutchman van Persie headed United in front after just six minutes with a thumping header from a Patrice Evra cross. The striker initiated the move, spreading the ball wide left and then arriving in the penalty area to finish of the move.

But due credit to Wigan, as Owen Coyle’s men looked to press hard for an equaliser. New signings Grant Holt and James McClean, were particularly impressive in the first half.

At the stroke of half-time, Wigan were nearly back on terms as Emmerson Boyce headed Ben Watson’s free-kick back across goal, but United scrambled clear to take a one-nothing lead in the second half.

United began the second half, just as they began the game. Tom Cleverley scuffed a shot woefully wide after some neat work from Wilfried Zaha and Danny Welbeck.

United finally got the all-important second goal on the hour mark as Evra, Cleverley and Welbeck passed their way around the Wigan box to find van Persie, whose shot was deflected off James Perch.

That all but secured the shield as United ran down the clock and gave talented youngster Adnan Januzaj his official debut. Their win however was marred by injures to Rafael and Zaha.

As United look to defend their title, FA Cup winners Wigan, will now turn their attention towards the Championship with hope of top flight football next season.
