Fabregas departure: A boon in disguise for Arsenal?

The transfer saga of Cesc Fabregas seemed to go on and on. I ,for one, believed Arsenal were always fighting a losing battle. Even if they had managed to retain him for one more season it would have resulted in an uneasy dressing room, which certainly is not suited when you want to win trophies. After his departure questions are being asked what next? It is possible that they will lose Nasri to Citizens. But some shrewd thinking from Wenger and Arsenal won’t be as hard hit.Nasri didn’t renew his contract for financial reasons and then came the want to win trophies. I am not blaming Nasri for choosing to do so. He is not at fault at asking for higher wages when players of lesser talent are being valued more and I am always in favour of a better financial future. But with the departure of Fabregas, a large chunk of weekly wages has been taken of their balance sheet. So certainly they can now afford to pay more to Nasri and thereby renew his contract. It will be like signing a free transfer.

Renewing Nasri’s contract provides numerous advantages to Arsenal. First out of the many being that I don’t see a player of Nasri’s caliber out there in the transfer market. Even if there was he would take some time adapting to life and playing style in North London. Also, it would mean that the funds from Fabregas’ transfer could be used to buy a center back or a holding midfielder which Gunners seriously need. Even Arsenal for once can afford to aggressively bid for their targets. But for this to happen, Wenger will have to convince his countryman that Arsenal remain strong and are gunning for trophies. Then lure him by showing him that he would be central to their plans and will be the central play maker, a position he wants and is suited too. And obviously the paycheck should be visible from Wenger’s pockets.

As far as the bitterness in the relationship between the club and the player is concerned, we have seen the Rooney saga last year and he is still a star at Manchester United.

The idea may seem a little far fetched to many but stranger things have happened on and off the football field.
