What a year the midfield maestro is having! Modric has hit a new high yesterday night when he grabbed the UEFA player of the year award. His list of achievements in this year is quite long, below are the exquisite ones:
- Champions league winner (In fact, a hat-trick of wins)
- World Cup finalist while leading his team (Most minutes in the world cup)
- Golden ball winner at the world cup
- UEFA Midfielder of the year
- UEFA Player of the year
All the achievements were very much deserved too. He has been at the heart of everything for Real Madrid and Croatia National team. Modric getting this recognition is a good news for the football and its fans.
Yet, people have mixed opinions on the UEFA Player of the year award. Modric beat Ronaldo in the vote by 90 points, whereas finishing 179 points ahead of third-placed Mohamed Salah. Let’s take a look at the reactions from some famous personalities:
Sergio Ramos:
The Los Blancos captain tipped Luka for the Ballon d'Or award. He shared an image on Instagram with the message "Now, for the Ballon d'Or". There is a high chance that Modric will break the Messi-Ronaldo dominance on the coveted trophy.
Jorge Mendes:
The super agent was left furious by UEFA when Modric was announced as the Player of the year at the gala.
"Simply ridiculous, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 15 goals, taking Real Madrid to Champions League victory once again, it's just ridiculous." Mendes said to the reporters.
Katia Aveiro (Ronaldo's sister):
Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the gala even after accepting the invitation. Maybe he knew that the award is going to Modric. Ronaldo's sister Katia did not take the news keenly and expressed her unhappiness on Instagram. She posted some comparison stats: the games played, the assists, the goals and the players of the week awards.
Julen Lopetegui:
The Madrid head coach was full of praise for Modric.
"I'm happy because Luca won it. He's one of our players and I'm sure he displayed merits to win it. Luca combines individual quality with the collective ideas he brings to the game - I love the way he has of interpreting football. But to be honest, I prefer collective awards rather than individual ones".
Modric:
He expressed his happiness and thanked his teammates at Madrid and Croatia National team.
What a year! Thanks Real Madrid, Croatia National team and everybody who helped me to achieve this amazing award 🙏❤️ #UEFAawards pic.twitter.com/f3zVV9Mq3s— Luka Modrić (@lukamodric10) 30 August 2018
