Could Xherdan Shaqiri be a Liverpool player next season?

With Liverpool set to be involved in the Champions League for the first time in five years next season, Brendan Rodgers has set about bolstering his squad to plug the holes within the Merseysiders’ small squad.

Having already completed the signing of Rickie Lambert for £4 million, he has now turned his attention to the midfield, despite the fact their most glaring weakness is in defence.

With a deal for England’s Adam Lallana edging further away rather than closer, Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri has emerged as Liverpool’s latest target.

The Swiss maestro, who is set to play a leading role for his country in the World Cup this summer, has grown unsettled due to his limited opportunities at the Bundesliga champions under Pep Guardiola.

There is a host of talent within the Bavarians’ ranks and it is no surprise that the 22-year-old is keen on a move away from the Allianz Arena in order to further his development.

Liverpool have reportedly opened negotiations with the exciting and eye-catching youngster over the possibility of a transfer this summer. Given Shaqiri’s talent he is unlikely to be available on the cheap, but with the Reds having baulked at the £30 million asking price for Lallana he could represent the cheaper of the pair.
