What’s the story?
The 'Clash of the legends Match' between Juventus and Barcelona will have to be rescheduled for another date. The Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) has cited the unavailability of the former Barcelona and Juventus stars as the main reason behind the rescheduling. However, the MDFA has not put a date on when the match will be played.
In case you didn’t know…
India has already witnessed top foreign teams, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Santos, and Cosmos. In 2011, the football-crazy city of Kolkata also witnessed an international friendly between Argentina and Venezuela.
The heart of the matter
There was a huge build-up to the legends match, initially scheduled to happen on April 27. This is bound to happen when the most decorated footballers of all time from the two European football giants are set to take center stage again.
David Trezeguet, Edgar Davids, Paulo Montero, Ciro Ferrara, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Gianluca Zambrotta are some of the Juventus legends who were set to play the game. Meanwhile, Andoni Golcoetxea, Frederik Dehu, MA Nadal, Frank de Boer, Juan Carlos Rodriguez and Jose Edmilson are among the Barcelona legends who were scheduled to play this match.
What’s next?
The idea behind the legends project is to popularize the club's name. This will be the 4th game for Barca legends.
It is vital for the match to bring in all the desired players for the match as only then will it produce the impact of promoting football in India. The fans are the most important stakeholders and it will be heartbreaking for them to not see their icons so MDFA has gone ahead with the decision.
Author’s take
It is true that the fans will be left disappointed with this rescheduling, especially those who would have planned their travel beforehand. The fans may have already incurred quite a few expenses to make the arrangements, but it is still better to watch the match with all the desired players than returning home feeling discontent.
