It is said, “If Sir Matt Busby is the Grandfather of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson is the father”. A football fanatic who has Man Utd running in his blood, Fergie has always evoked zealotry from fans. Sir Alex is an inspirational figure who is considered by many as one of the best club managers ever for turning the Red Devils into a trophy hungry powerhouse. Into his 25th year at Old Trafford as gaffer, his dedication to his craft is inimitable.

During a stellar career which has involved winning almost everything for Man Utd, it is indisputable that Sir Alex has left an indelible mark on the club through his policies and strategies. Extremely famous for his advocation of the idea that no player is bigger than the club and strict discipline, Fergie has always kept the image of the club untainted. In an age when capitalism is taking over club football, Sir Alex is a champion of youth empowerment, having deliberately steered away from bringing in established stars and strongly believing in the policy of youth development. His youth policy has always paid rich dividends, turning superstars out of Cantona, Keane, Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo, Rooney and sensations out of Nani, Macheda and Rafael. Club football needs more people like Sir Alex to drive out the capitalistic mania that is gripping it now in the form of clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City. His recent signing of the previously unknown Mexican Javier Hernandez has already attracted plenty of attention, accentuated by the diminutive striker’s impressive exploits in South Africa.

Known for scaling mount impossible, his never-say-die attitude is reflected in his team’s style of play, most notably in the Red Devils’ several sensational wins late into added or extra time. This kind of managerial style coupled with his keen eye to spot young talent has made the Old Trafford faithful have unflinching faith in him. As 2010-11 season begins, Sir Alex will set out to make amends for his uncharacteristic errors last season and help Man Utd regain hegemony in England and Europe. With an aging midfield and the rise of Man City, some pundits have already begun to write off the Red Devils’ chances to win this season. But with Sir Alex Ferguson, impossible is nothing.
