Fernandinho, the Brazilian midfielder, sacrificed £4m worth of various payments owed to him by Shakhtar Donetsk in order to strike a deal with Manchester City.
But City still paid around £30m for their main summer transfer target, more than they initially hoped, but they were convinced that the money has been spent on a top player appears vindicated as the playmaker himself has sacrificed such a large sum.
Shakhtar Donetsk originally wanted £42.5m for 28-year-old, but the player’s gracious nature accelerated a complicated deal.
Fernandinho said: “This is a change, a challenge and a chance I have been waiting a long time for, playing in the Premier League for City is like a dream. My ambition here is to win all the titles, the team here is strong and so is the greatness of the club and the supporters. Professionally this is a spectacular thing. Playing for a huge club in a huge League makes me so happy.”
He will be joined by Spanish international Jesús Navas at City. The Sevilla winger’s move, for a fee of £16m and not the £23m as was suggested by the La Liga club, has been delayed as Navas is in the United States with Spain but he is expected to undergo a medical next week.
Meanwhile there are reports that City will confirm Manuel Pellegrini’s appointment as their manager on early next week by either Monday or Tuesday.
