Out of favour Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago has risked further alienation from the Bernabeu faithful by claiming that Barcelona are the best team in the world and the Madrid fans just ‘do not want to admit it’. The Argentine looked destined to leave Real this summer regardless, but these comments will only serve to hasten his departure.
Speaking to ESPN Argentina, the player was perhaps overly forthright when he said the fans were expecting too much for Mourinho’s Madrid team to finish above Barcelona. He said-
“Barcelona are the best team in history,”
“They are well above Real Madrid and the fans do not want to admit it. Last season, the fans thought we could finish above them, but it was impossible.”
Gago was a much sought after player a couple of years ago, and was brought to Madrid for a hefty sum of 18 million pounds amidst much fanfare and hype, as most Madrid signings are. The former Boca Juniors man started his Los Blancos career quite brightly, putting in many eye catching performances and justifying his price tag.
However, as time went by, Gago failed to acclimatise himself to Madrid’s style of play and was pushed down the pecking order fairly quickly. He rarely got chances to perform and was shuttled regularly between the first team and the reserves. The unlucky midfielder was then struck by a succession of injuries escalating in severity, and that restricted his role in the team further. With Jose Mourinho expected to beef up the midfield further this summer, opportunities at Madrid look bleak for Gago.
Consequently, Gago admitted that he would make an informed decision on his future after comprehensive talks with manager Jose Mourinho. He was heavily inclined towards a return to native club Boca Juniors, who he said were ‘like a second home’ to him.
Gago was linked with a move to Liverpool a few weeks ago, but refuted all the rumours and said that no one had approached him in this regard.
These current comments from Gago about Barcelona, which some people will claim to be frank and honest, will not go down well with the Madrid faithful who expect success and silverware each year. A transfer to another club seems ever more likely now for Gago, and it’s only a matter of time before we see him donning a different set of colours. Stay tuned for more.
