In a new book by Simon Hughes, titled 'Ring of Fire - Liverpool FC into the 21st century - the players’ stories', Torres spoke candidly about his departure as he has revealed that he felt betrayed by the club director and the ownership at the club. El Nino has said that he had talks with Christian Purslow and also his successor, Damien Commoli who was roped in from Spurs when the new owners bought the club, the Fenway Sports Group.
Torres was saddened by the club's sale of Javier Mascherano and was unsure about how the team was heading towards in the future. “Comolli told me that the new owners (FSG), they had an idea of how to spend their investment,” said Torres. “They wanted to bring in young players, to build something new. I was thinking to myself, this takes time to work. It takes two, three, four, maybe even 10 years."
Torres continued, “I didn’t have that time. I was 27 years old. I did not have time to wait. I wanted to win. Here we are five years later and they are still trying to build – around the same position in the league as when I left.” He claimed that the club portrayed him in a bad light as he added saying, "It was presented as if I was a traitor. It was not like this in the discussions. Liverpool could not admit they were doing something wrong with the whole team. They had to find a guilty one.”
While the supporters were in shock and showed their displeasure towards him in his time at Chelsea, but the last instance where Torres played at Anfield during a charity game for Steven Gerrard Foundation, he was given a rapturous welcome. It was a great gesture from the Merseyside crowd as they cherished the great memories he gave them during his time at Liverpool.
