Luis Suarez has been banned from football for four months and a further 9 international matches by FIFA after he was found guilty of biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in their final Group D match in Natal.
This comes as a huge blow for his country Uruguay, currently in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup as well as his club Liverpool FC. The four-month ban means the Uruguayan can’t play for his club Liverpool till mid- October. He is expected to miss 9 matches for them during this time.
Fifa released the following statement:
“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field”
He has been found in breach of art. 48 par. 1 lit. d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) (assault), and art. 57 of the FDC (an act of unsporting behaviour towards another player).
The FIFA disciplinary committee arrived at a decision just a day after starting proceedings against the English Player of the Year.
The ban on football activity also means that he cannot enter a stadium during the 4 month ban. He also cannot enter a stadium during the first 9 Uruguay matches for which he is suspended. This, however will not have any effect on any transfer activity should a club choose to buy him.
He has also been fined CHF 100,000 which comes out to be €82,000.
Interestingly, Suarez can play for Uruguay in friendly matches after this four month ban gets over.
