Peru began their tournament opener against Ghana well by taking an early lead courtesy a Daniel Chavez spot kick. However, an own goal from keeper Miguel Cardenas denied them a glorious win. This was to be their only point of the championship as they went on to lose against China and Costa Rica 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.
The Jotitas eventually ended their group in last place which remains the worst performance by a South American host at the U-17 World Cup.
