Germany and England may be the biggest foes on the field of football, but it’s the game itself that unites them. The attraction for World Cup 2014’s gripping finale attracted a peak television audience over 20 million viewers in England, according to reports.

The Germans’s fourth triumph at the World Stage attracted 16.7 million viewers on BBC 1, while a further 3.8 million viewers watched the spectacle unfold on ITV. The numbers when added crossed 20.5 million viewers.

The BBC has always been the most prolific broadcasters England in regards to the World Cup. This time around, it was no different as they were able to attract 50.3% of the total viewership to their channel. Meanwhile ITV was able to draw 12% of the crowd towards their presentation.

The final average figures for the BBC and ITV stood and 12.1 million and 2.8 million respectively.

However, the numbers had fallen for both broadcasters from what they enjoyed in the 2010 edition. While BBC recorded a peak audience of 17.9 million from their coverage at Soth Africa, ITV ‘s figures itself were a tad over the 3.8 million that they recorded this time around.

Even the average figures from 2010 (14.9 million and 3.6 million for BBC and ITV respectively), were down for both.
