The Netherlands battered Hungary 6-1 at the Amsterdam Arena in a virtuoso second half performance which saw the Oranje score no less than 5 goals. The victory was dented however as Arjen Robben limped off injured at the end of the game.
The Dutch began the game on the front foot with some incisive football but it was Hungary who scored first with Balazs Dzudzsak unleashing a powerful shot which evaded the Dutch goalkeeper.
The Netherlands responded well and equalized in the 21st minute. Some sloppy defending saw Hungary unable to clear their lines and allowed Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt to set up teammate Robin Van Persie who swiftly put the ball into the back of the net. It was to be a sign of things to come with the rest of the match proceeding in similar one way fashion.
The Oranje looked to score at every opportunity. Dirk Kuyt once again involved as he headed in the ball from a corner only to have it disallowed for a foul inside the area.
Despite their attacking intent the Dutch could not extend their lead and the half ended 1-1.
Arjen Robben came in for the excellent Dirk Kuyt and immediately got involved with Van Persie and Sneijder in a beautiful move which seemed to be destined to end with a goal, only for Martin Fulop to make a fantastic save.
The third goal of the evening duly arrived in the 56th minute. Van Bronckhorst crossing for Wesley Sneijder to finish from close range.
The Hungarians seemed unable to cope with crosses put inside their box and the Oranje fully capitalized on this weakness. Van Bronckhorst once again provided the assist as his low cross was met by Robben near the far post who had to apply the simplest of finishes.
The Netherlands added to their goal tally as Mark Van Bommel sent a powerful shot from distance past Hungarian goalkeeper Martin Fulop to make it 4-1.
Eljero Elia then made it 5-1 with a fine solo effort which saw him dance past multiple Hungarian defenders and score with ease.
The Dutch did not press back despite being 4 goals up and Robben scored his second of the evening from outside the box.
The Netherlands having comprehensively won their last few friendlies will go full of confidence into the World Cup. They are looking a well oiled unit and no one could deny them a final appearance based on this performance.
