Spain produced a masterful performance as they thrashed Poland 6-0 in their final World Cup warm up game. First half goals from David Villa and David Silva put the European champions firmly in control. It was the second half, however which stole your breath away as Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Fernando Torres all scored in a mesmerizing display of attacking football.
La Furia Roja had the game under control from the start as they dominated possession from the first minute with their slick one touch passing.
Spain were rewarded for their lively performance early on as Andres Iniesta produced a beautiful cross from the outside of his right foot which was met by David Villa who turned it in from close range.
From the whistle, Poland were outclassed and did not seem to know how to counter Spain’s possession football. Two minutes later, the European Champions added to their tally with an excellent team goal. Villa, Xavi and Iniesta ran rings around the Polish defense before squaring the ball to Silva who had the simple task of tapping the ball into the back of the net.
The tempo of the game slowed down after these two quickfire goals but it was still firmly in Spain’s hands. Poland got no respite as Spain were quick to snuff out any attack and turn it against their opposition. Sheer luck and the fact that Spain took their foot off the pedal were the only reasons why Poland left the field at half-time only 2-0 down.
The second half saw Spain add another goal within ten minutes of the restart as Xavi’s freekick took a huge deflection and fortuitously landed near Xabi Alonso who slotted home from the edge of the box.
Fabregas, who was on for Xavi then made it 4-0 as he cooly slotted past Tomasz Kuszczak.
Torres, who was brought on to rapturous applause after his recovery from a knee injury added a fifth as he got on the end of Pedro’s cross to announce his arrival back on the world stage.
Five minutes later, Torres had the Poland defense at sixes and sevens and though he could not apply the finish, the loose ball was pounced on by Pedro who finished emphatically to make it 6-0.
Each of Spain’s goal typified the team’s amazing chemistry. La Furia Roja did not rely on a brilliant performance by any single player but rather on the team’s devastating combination of patient attacking play and possession football. With such performances, Spain only further justify their favourites tag and could finally end their long wait for the World Cup trophy.
