Atletico Madrid pulled off one of the greatest results in recent history by knocking out Barcelona from the Champions League by an aggregate score of 3-2. It was the second time they have achieved this feat. The last time was in 2013/14 when they reached the final but lost to Real Madrid.
With the draw to take place on Friday, the possibility of another Madrid derby looms large. But according to Marca their left back Filipe Luis says he would not want to face the 10-time champions of the tournament. “The only thing that I ask in the semi-finals is that we avoid Real Madrid, we don't want to play them.” said the Brazilian.
Real Madrid managed one of the greatest comebacks against Wolfsburg on Tuesday. Los Blancos were trailing by 2 goals from the first leg in Germany but Cristiano Ronaldo delivered when it mattered.
The Portuguese scored a brilliant hat-trick to send his team into the semi-finals. Ronaldo also stated his preference for an opposition in the semi’s but unfortunately, Benfica were knocked out by Bayern Munich after a 2-2 draw in the second leg.
Atletico’s youngster Lucas Hernandez wasn’t too concerned about the draw or the prospect of facing Madrid saying, “We will see what happens. If it is Madrid, then it is Madrid.”
Luis warned of complacency going into the next round of matches despite defeating arguably the best team in the tournament so far.”We have achieved what we wanted to and we are satisfied, but we still haven't won anything. If you relax for a moment, you could throw away your entire season.”
Barca still the best in the world: Luis
Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar are one of the most feared strike forces in the world but none of them could fire last night. “Barcelona have the best strikers in the world, and they are always going to create chances, but we have managed to match them” said the defender.
The left-back had another memorable night two years ago when Diego Simeone beat Barcelona for the first time as Atletico manager. ”I thought that in my career I would never get to experience as good of a game against Barcelona as I did back in 2014, and the game from today [Wednesday] has been even better.”
But Luis still believes Barcelona are the best team in the world at the moment. “For me, Barcelona are still the best team in the world, by a long way,”
