15th January turned out to be a great day for the thousands of Mohun Bagan fans all over the globe, as they were finally allowed to play in this season’s I-League, and had their ban for the next two years revoked.
Former Indian captain and Mohun Bagan star striker, Bhaichung Bhutia found the removal of the ban as a surprise and was very happy for the fans of the Mohun Bagan, who have been shedding tears since the decision of justice Ashok Ganguly.
“I am happy for the fans and the supporters that the ban has been removed. But to be frank the decision was a surprise for me. It seemed that the criminal escaped the fine by paying the penalty,” said Bhaichung.
Bhaichung still thinks that the 2 crore fine will be a cake walk for a club like Mohun Bagan to pay. Mohun Bagan, having such a huge fan base and loads of sponsors, can easily manage such a sum, believes Bhutia.
“The fine was not at all a big one. Some of the Mohun Bagan players’ salary is almost the same. I hoped AIFF would have fined the officials too,” added Bhutia.
AIFF player of the year, Sayed Rahim Nabi was finally relieved after so many days of stress following the news of his team being freed from the ban. Nabi was overwhelmed by the decision of AIFF and wanted to thank them.
“It is heartening to learn that the ban has been removed. We have trained hard and will definitely try that we are not pushed into the relegation zone. I want to thank AIFF for reconsidering the ban,” said Rahim Nabi.
Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa doesn’t have the time to relax, as Mohun Bagan will now have to start from scratch, as all their points have been forfeited. Bencherifa said:
“We have to work really hard to escape from the clutches of relegation. Hopefully my players will come together as a team and play the best football of their lives in the upcoming matches.”
