The summer transfer market has seen many protracted and still unresolved sagas. The future of Gareth Bale, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo is still uncertain. There have also been questions about the drawing power of EPL, with many big European stars like Cavani, Falcao, Villa, Higuain opting to move to other leagues despite interest from English clubs.
But the transfer market on the English shores has been anything but quiet. Many big names have landed in the Premier League, with more expected to arrive before the window closes.
Manchester City have once again been the biggest spenders, with an outlay of over £100 million in acquiring talented players like Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo.
Chelsea have continued their new policy of buying young creative players, and have recruited some exciting players like Andre Schurrle and Marco Van Ginkel.
Manchester United begin life under David Moyes, still waiting to get a marquee signing after a failed attempt to sign Cesc Fabregas.
Arsene Wenger, who supposedly has a huge ‘war chest’, is yet to use it, despite being linked to many top players over the summer.
Tottenham might well be preparing for life after Gareth Bale with astute signings like Soldado, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho.
Elsewhere, Swansea have done decent business again with Jonjo Shelvey and WilFried Bony expected to be an integral part of the team this season. Here’s looking at the five best signings this summer-
1. Wilfried Zaha (Manchester United)- Though he was technically signed in January, the gifted English winger begins his career with the Red Devils this summer. He has been one of the few positives that emerged from the tepid pre-season tour. It remains to be seen if he can step up to the demands of the Premier League, after almost single handedly carrying Crystal Palace to promotion last season.
2. Andre Schurrle (Chelsea)-
Only 22 years of age, Schurrle is already an integral part of the German national team. He is equally adept at playing on the wings or as a central forward. He scored an impressive 14 goals and assisted 9 times last season for Bayer Leverkusen. He will provide much needed depth in attack for Chelsea, who were over-reliant on the trio of Mata, Oscar and Hazard last season.
3. Roberto Soldado (Tottenham)-
Arriving from Valencia at a club record transfer fee of $35 million, the prolific striker may be the answer to Tottenham’s problems in attack last season, when they only had perennially injured Defoe and lethargic Adebayor in their ranks. A true classical striker known for his poaching skills and movement in the box, Soldado fits coach Villas-Boas’s philosophy of vertical football perfectly.
4. Stevan Jovetic (Manchester City)-
Following the departures of Balotelli and Tevez, Manchester City snapped the highly rated Montenegrin forward, who was on the radar of many top European clubs. He has been criticized for his apparent lack of goals, but is counted among the best in Europe in creating chances. Paired with a lethal finisher like Sergio Aguero, the duo can terrorize the league’s defenders.
5. Wilfried Bony (Swansea City)-
Bought for a club record 12 million, the young Ivorian striker already looks like a smart piece of business by Michael Laudrup. He scored an astonishing 31 goals in just 30 games in Eredivisie and began his life as a Swansea player, scoring two goals on his competitive debut in the Euro league. He will relieve a lot of pressure off Michu who did the bulk of the scoring last season.
