Five things we learned from Wigan Athletic vs Manchester United

1. United need to find a replacement for Scholes this Summer

Manchester United had a mix of shock and wonderment after their away defeat against Wigan Athletic last night. Paul Scholes was rested for last night’s game against Wigan Athletic with Carrick and Giggs partnering in the midfield. They looked so lost in midfield without Paul Scholes. Tom Cleverley was supposed to be Scholes replacement in the beginning of the season, but due to the series of injuries that Cleverley went through, he looks like he may not be the immediate replacement for Scholes. United needs to write a fat cheque for a replacement for Scholes this summer and it should be their priority if they want to challenge other teams in Europe.

2. The Race for the Premier League Title just got Interesting

City won their home game against West Brom last night with a margin of four goals. The gap between United and City has reduced to five points with just five games to go. The derby day match between City and United could be crucial. City has never lost a home game this season. It could pose a threat to United’s title challenge with City’s attacking spearhead, Aguero and Tevez finding the back of the net last night. With just a month left for this season of Premier League, the race has just become more interesting after last night’s results.

3. FA needs to review the Standard of Officiating the game.

The FA are under pressure this season because of the poor decisions given by the match officials almost every week. It could damage the title hopes of the teams who are at the top of the table or send a team into the relegation zone. In last night’s game, Phil Dowd and his assistants was guilty of a series of errors. United wasn’t given a penalty in the second half which could have helped them to get at least a point out of the match. Jonny Evans should have been sent off his tackle on Maloney in the second half. The FA needs to improve the standards of officiating and try to reduce the such glaring errors.

4. Roberto Martinez is the Star for Wigan Athletic in the later stage of season.

Roberto Martinez played the same lineup which played the last five games for Wigan. Wigan created history by defeating the defending Champions for the first time after going 14 games without a win. In the last four games Wigan has played, they have beaten Stoke, Liverpool and Manchester United and have lost to Chelsea due to bad referring. Martinez has lifted Wigan out of the Relegation zone and are currently two points above Bolton, who are in 17th position. With the way Wigan are playing their game in the fag end of the season, they will surely enjoy another year of Premier League football. All the credit goes to Martinez.

5. Wigan fans need to attend more Home games.

Wigan Athletic fans needs to support their team by attending more home games and make sure their Stadium is filled for most of the games. Last night’s attendance was just above 18,000 when the stadium capacity is just above 25,000. The way Wigan played last night, I am sure the next time Wigan plays at DW Stadium the stadium will be in full attendance. Come on Wigan Fans wake up, get out of the pub and walk into the DW stadium, the next time Wigan plays and boost their confidence. If you don’t then no worries as their confidence is way too high after defeating the champions Manchester United.
