The midfielder, 28, has not played for Manchester United since being diagnosed with a bowel condition in November.
And Old Trafford chief Fergie is unsure whether he will ever be fully fit again.
He said: “We’ll wait and see about that. Obviously the boy is trying very hard to get back to his level.
“It’s not going to be easy but we’ll give him every possible chance and we’ll see how he does.”
Fletcher was given some coaching responsibilities towards the end of last season in order to try to keep him involved.
Fergie added: “Darren’s a terrific lad. We all hope he can come back.”
