When asked why Real Madrid didn’t sign Radamel Falcao instead of Javier Hernandez from Manchester United, club President Florentino Perez made a sarcastic yet logical statement to Spanish Radio station Cadena Cope.
“If I’d brought Radamel Falcao, we might as well make Jorge Mendes president of Real Madrid,” Perez joked about Falcao’s agent being the President instead.
Jorge Mendes is a Portuguese football agent, or “super-agent” as most people say, and boasts of handling clients such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao, José Mourinho, Ángel Di María, James Rodriguez and many more.
Apparently, Mendes had been putting a lot of pressure on Real Madrid for his client Falcao, and is even suspected to have been the mastermind behind the Colombian’s tweet about joining Real Madrid last week.
Falcao’s tweet that was deleted later
However, the tweet was soon deleted, and the player later denied tweeting that, claiming it to be a photoshop.
Perez’s comment may have been light-hearted, but they do make sense since Mendes has been heavily involved with many of the players in the Real Madrid squad and their transfers this season.
“The deal with Real Madrid did not happen because if you have money and you go to the market to buy a shirt or a pair of trousers, you have to decide whether to buy it or not,” said Falcao’s father Radamel García. “Real Madrid chose not to. I don’t know, I have the feeling they wanted the player for free with a number of conditions.”
