As the 2013-14 season comes to its final stages, every club has shown its strengths and weaknesses and we can very much see which position a club is strong in and which position needs reinforcements. Clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool may have had brilliant seasons but do they still have certain weaknesses to improve on? Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur with all their expensive signings may still need to make more such signings in the summer. Arsenal, a club reluctant at times to spend the big buck may just need to break their tradition. Can Everton get another brilliant set of loanees for the next season? And finally, is age really getting the better of Manchester United? This is what I believe these clubs need to make sure of in the Summer.
#1 Liverpool
Buy a holding midfielder and retain Luis Suarez
Yes, they have Lucas Leiva and players like Steven Gerrard, Joe Allen can take up that position, however the presence of a strong midfield enforcer like Yaya Toure or Nemanja Matic can really help complement their outstanding attacking prowress and add steel to the midfield.Luis Suarez needs to stay for this club and Brendan Rodgers to successfully complete their transition back amongst the elites of Europe.
Rumoured Targets- Yevhen Konoplyanka, Lazar Markovic, Yann M'Villa.
#2 Manchester City
Buy a Centre Back
You may argue that Joe Hart and Costel Pantillimon doesn't quite make the best goalkeeping duo at a club of such prestige, however, I would not consider buying a goalkeeper as a priority for Manchester City but rather look to sign a World Class Centre Back. Defensively Manchester City have been quite woeful at times particularly due to injuries to Vincent Kompany and then Matija Nastasic. Martin Demichellis, in particular, as well as Joleon Lescott are just not good enough to play week in week out for City.
Rumoured Targets- Fernando, Eliaquim Managala, Luis Suarez.
#3 Chelsea
Buy a Striker
Looking at the Chelsea defense and midfield it is easy to say that are the strongest on paper in the league. However, a good striker is just as important in a game of football and unfortunately, Chelsea don't have one. Fernando Torres, is well, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba cannot really be called anything near World Class and Samuel Eto'o, who is sure to leave next season has a quite ordinary season. Bringing a World Class Striker to this team next season can make them an impossible team to beat.
Rumoured Targets- Wayne Rooney, Diego Costa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
#4 Arsenal
Buy a Striker and a Holding Midfielder
Arsenal much like Chelsea may have a strong defense and midfield but what they are missing is that one striker who will convert the many chances that they get in a match. Oliver Giroud and Nicklas Bendtner are definitely not good enough to be the two main strikers for the Champions League club. Another position in which Arsenal may look to strengthen is the Holding midfield position where there is just a shortage of players. Yes, they have Flamini, Arteta and Diaby at the position however they need to increase their squad depth especially since the latter is more often seen in the injury list rather than the starting 11.
Rumoured Targets- Julian Draxler, Loic Remy, Alex Song.
#5 Everton
Retain all loanees
Everton have been brilliant this season, ousting major heavyweights like Arsenal and Manchester United as well as giving Arsenal stiff competition for the final UCL spot. They owe much of their good work to their loan signings. Gerard Deulofeu, the wonderkid from Barca's academy has been a game changer on a number of occassions. Gareth Barry's experience to the centre of Midfield has given a much needed stabiltity to this young Everton squad. Romelu Lukaku has been outstanding- scoring goals for fun, ably setting up and complementing teammates. He has undoubtedtly been the face of the club this season.
Rumoured Targets- Romelu Lukaku (permanent), Gerard Deulofeu (loan).
#6 Tottenham Hotspur
Buy a Striker and a Left Back
They did spend 110 million last season, however it is fair to say that it didn't work out. Tottenham Hotspur need a Striker who is not named Roberto Soldado. Emmanuel Adebayor and Harry Kane are good options, however, Adebayor is past his prime, and Harry Kane is not the finished product that can propel this club to Champions League next season. Another position needing reinforcements is at Left Back. Danny Rose, Ezekiel Fryers and Kyle Naughton are a trio unworthy of playing for a Premier League club given the number of defensive errors they have conceded this season.
Rumoured Targets- Romelu Lukaku, Yevhen Konoplyanka, Steven Caulker.
#7 Manchester United
Buy a Centre Back and a Holding Midfielder
Manchester United have basically been poor in every department this season so it was hard to pick out just two. Some may argue that they need a new World Class winger and a replacement for Patrice Evra at left back, however what they most certainly need is a Cente Back. Rio Ferdinand has been very bad and Nemanja Vidic is leaving for Inter, so that leaves United with Chris Smalling and Johnny Evans who aren't exactly the strongest duo around. Another position that needs strengthening is at CDM. Marouanne Fellaini has been a bad buy, while Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher are in their 30's . Tom Cleverley isn't exactly turning out to be the next Paul Scholes either.
Rumoured Targets- Toni Kroos, Paul Pogba, Phil Jagielka.
