It’s just one of those days where football obeys that one Murphy law – Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Whether it’s defenders putting the ball into their own net or the goalkeeper having a nightmare, drubbings are a part and parcel of the game.In this list, we focus on those matches that involved at least a 7-goal margin of victory. So for those expecting an 8-2 or a 6-1, you shall be disappointed.
#5 Southampton 8-0 Sunderland
The most recent drubbing on this list saw Southampton, who many were tipping to struggle, put 8 past Gus Poyet’s Sunderland in a match that saw two comical own goals and poor defending overall from the visitors.
It was telling that the demolition job started with an own goal by Santiago Vergini, an indicator of how things would eventually pan out. For the hosts, Dusan Tadic assisted four goals and Graziano Pelle scored twice as Southampton made their critics eat humble pie.
In losing the match, Sunderland recorded a new low of having lost 8-0 on four occasions in their club history.
#4 Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa
Chelsea make yet another appearance on our list, courtesy of their 8-0 thrashing of Aston Villa back in December 2012. Although Rafa Benitez was never truly accepted by the Blues faithful, even they must admit that this was a spectacular result.
The much-maligned Torres opened the scoring as early as the 3rd minute and the goals just kept on coming. When it finished, as many as 7 Chelsea players had scored a goal – a new EPL record.
For the geeks amongst you, here are Chelsea’s goalscorers from that match – David Luiz, Torres, Oscar, Hazard, Lampard, Ramires (2), Ivanovic.
#3 Spurs 9-1 Wigan
The whipping boys from Wigan once again feature on this list. Spurs, led by a rampant Jermain Defoe, put 9 past a hapless Wigan defense to secure one of the biggest wins in English Football history.
Here are the records that were created, equalled or shattered on the day.
– Defoe became only the third player to score 5 goals in an EPL match. Andy Cole and Alan Shearer were the others. Dimitar Berbatov would later join the list
– Spurs recorded the second highest scoreline in EPL history, after Manchester United’s 9-0 win oer Ipswich in 1995.
– Defoe’s second half hat-trick was the second fastest in EPL history.
– Spurs recorded their biggest win in the EPL era.
– All of Defoe’s 5 goals came in the second half – a new record.
#2 Chelsea 8-0 Wigan
Chelsea fans will remember this one fondly, for it was the day they wrapped up the 2009/10 EPL title in scintalling fashion. Needing a win to halt Manchester Uniteds reign as three-time champions, Chelsea started early and never let up.
Didier Drogba got a hat-trick, Anelka scored two hell, even Kalou and Ashley Cole got goals that day. Just goes to show how awful Wigan were at the time.
The win, at the time, marked Chelseas biggest victory in their 105-year history and helped them set a record of 103 goals scored in a domestic 38-game season.
Chelsea had previously beaten Stoke City 7-0 in the run-up to this match.
#1 Middlesborough 8-1 Man City
Remember Middlesborough, that team that always looked like going somewhere but eventually went nowhere?
Remember Manchester City before they had an injection of serious cash?
Well, if you do, then you will remember this epic match from the 2007-08 season. Boro ran riot at home against City, eventually finishing with a massive 8-1 win.
Richard Dunne (who else) saw red for a tackle on Tuncay Sanli and Afonso Alves grabbed 4 goals! It almost feels like another era for City fans, back when their team was usually found in the middle of the table, rather than the top.
Enjoy the highlights from this crazy match of football.
