Football fans and their superstitions

Brazil v Argentina

“Football?? Bloody hell”

This quote from Sir Alex Ferguson itself somehow describes the importance and the intensity of this game called “FOOTBALL”. Football, as we know, is being played by countries that are still not a part of the United Nations. A game that has more disciples than any specific religion and can force you to put any and every ‘important’ job on the back-burner and wait until the final whistle blows.

The most important factor in football are the fans and the followers. Be it a fan of a nation or of a particular club, every single one of them has their own specific way to express their support. The best and the most entertaining spectator sport will surely not be the same without the craziness and the unconditional support it receives from their supporters.

In this article, we will reveal all the craziest secrets of a football fan that concerns his or her support for their favourite club or country.

Soumyadeep Bhattacharya, a diehard Liverpool supporter, tends to change positions depending upon the condition of a game. “I don’t change my position when we are dominating but I do try out different positions when we are being dominated,” he said.

Vishal Chetri, another die-hard Liverpool supporter, says that he remains in one specific position throughout the game, notwithstanding the condition of the game. “It’s completely about the loyalty and belief I have for my club”, said Vishal. “I do not change my position and my left leg is always on top of my right one and I never speak when a match is on progress,” he added.

Saurav Halder, an Arsenal supporter, has a very interesting way of expressing his support for his favourite club. “I mute the TV and change the channel while the pre-match analysts make their predictions.”

Tamas Sinha, a Manchester United fanatic from Kolkata, revealed that he refrains himself from going to the bathroom until the game is over. A similar kind of response was found from a couple of other United supporters. Based on the performance of the Red Devils, this “superstition” might not seem legitimate at all or at the most necessary. They score when they want.

Somdutto Bhattacharyya, another diehard Manchester United supporter, was actually very specific about his preferences. His superstition list goes one like this:-1. The TV volume should always be 7.2. A pet bottle of water should always be on the left side of the TV.3. He sits on an old chair while watching United matches.4. Even he refrains himself from answering nature’s call while the game is on progress.

Sejal Modi, a long time Liverpudlian, was quite candid about her confessions as she claimed to not watch any late night matches because she believes it might be the reason for Liverpool’s defeat. Based on the recent performances, she must immediately arrange for some coffee and stay awake for Liverpool’s next Europa League game against Zenit.

Varun Kashyap was the only Real Madrid fan who claimed to not watch any El Clasico. “I do not and shall not ever watch an El Clasico” claimed Varun. “I am ready to stay awake and watch every single game Real Madrid plays but I shall never watch them play against Barcelona,” he added.

On the other hand, a Barcelona supporter named Pratick Mondal has claimed to sit in the exact same place and watch every Barcelona game. He has further claimed that the same execution of support is shared when his favourite football country, Argentina, is playing a match.

Soham Sinha Roy has frankly revealed that he does not allow his father to come near the television because he believes, (read “fears”) that his father might be the reason behind “a slip in between De Gea’s legs”

Before I end this article, I would like to confess my superstitions. I always sit in a specific chair at an angle of 45 degree from my television. I always point my leg towards the end Liverpool attacks in each half. My mobile phone stays in my right hand and the TV remote stays in the table on my left side. It does not matter to me if Liverpool is playing in Anfield, away from home or even in Narnia; I always begin my topic with the quotes “LIVERPOOL vs xyz”. Liverpool vs Swansea City on 17th of February, 2013 was my 173rd Liverpool match in a trot.

Football fans over the decades have shown why football is arguably the greatest sport ever. Based on the brand values and support, European teams have a huge fan base all over the world. The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and plenty of other clubs have a huge fan base. It is not possible for every single fan to witness their favourite club on their home ground; but nonetheless, their support stays as strong as those who enjoy the luxury to watch their team play live in front of them.
