Football Fans in India survey- An urgent appeal

This survey is turning out to be quite a laborious process contrary to what I had initially predicted it to be. It really does take some convincing to make the so called “football crazy” people to fill in a questionnaire on football. Yes, the term ‘football fans in India’ does seem a cliche at times.

To those who already have filled it in, couldn’t thank you enough. You guys did your part! Well moving on, just a reminder to those who have not filled it in, PLEASE DO FILL IN THE SURVEY AND SHARE IT WITHIN THE FOOTBALLING FRATERNITY.Wonder how many times I have used this line over the month of February!

Yet I do take pride in my efforts, and appreciate those who appreciate it. Truly, it feels good to hear that such attempts have never been made before of my knowledge, please correct me if wrong. Hence an appeal to all football fans who are interested in studying/ researching the problems of Indian football rather than mastering the art of armchair opinion, please do take an initiative to use football as a tool to relate your academics. It’s a really great way to learn and does make what you study a tad more interesting.

There are countless aspects through which you can study sport in a country. History, sociology, psychology and economics of sport to name a few of the most common areas of study as seen in the the developed world. A survey on premier league fan behaviour in England conducted by the concerned governing body itself, which I recently came across, made me wonder how fruitful such attempts if made in India would be. Policy through research has far greater impact on a developing world as through such a process one is revealing the unknown.

In the above context, the Indian football market is relatively unknown, and there is no better way than digging deep and furbishing proof of its shortcomings to suggest policies for its growth and development. The only way to sustained footballing success. Its easy to say “please build academies” but difficult to point out as to why a corporate would even invest in one, if the prospective returns are not well defined. One of the major reasons why there is so less sponsorship in football.

I must recognize the fact that some individuals and organizations have gone out of their way to promote this survey, the sportskeeda team being one of them. However, it’s the fans who make the final choice of filling it in.

An appeal to all to promote it in any way they can as the survey closes on the 5th of March. I will be posting result updates in couple of days of the 700 respondents who have filled it in till date. Another 300 to go, wish me luck!
