This year Chelsea have been enduring one of most disastrous campaigns faced by a top tier club in recent history. Nothing has gone according to plan for the Blues, from mismatched tactics to underperforming players and reported dissent in the dressing room all contributing to their decline this year.Curiously, the London club have a massive 33 players on loan at the moment – players that are more than capable of contributing vital inputs for them this season but are unavailable as they were deemed surplus at the start of the year and shipped away to get regular game time. These are the 5 best players that Chelsea currently have loaned out and that they desperately need back.
#5 Tomas Kalas
Chelsea’s dismal campaign this season has largely been down to their crumbling defence. The once impregnable Chelsea back four has been constantly ripped to shreds this year. As a result, rumours of a complete overhaul of Chelsea’s defence have been circulating.
While a complete overhaul may not be necessary given the fact that the Chelsea defence is still comprised of impressive individuals, a new, fresh injection to that ageing backline would be more than welcome.
Chelsea academy product Tomas Kalas could be the perfect fit. Currently on loan at Middlesborough, the defender is quick on his feet and with a lot of experience on his shoulders for someone of his age, the Czech full back displayed his incredible maturity and ability when he successfully marshalled the mighty Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge at Anfield when Chelsea took them on two years ago.
#4 Lucas Piazon
Piazon arrived from Sao Paolo in the summer of 2011 with the tag of being “the next Kaka”. To further his talents, the Brazilian was loaned out multiple times since then and has impressed recently in campaigns with Eredivisie club Vitesse and then Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.
His creativity and penchant for scoring has always been on display wherever he’s been loaned out to and thus been steadily raising his stock.
Currently on loan at Reading, the Brazilian’s versatility across the attacking line would reap massive dividends at Chelsea if he returns to the club.
#3 Patrick Bamford
One of Chelsea’s and England’s brightest young talents, the tall forward has found the back of the net with ease wherever he’s been.
First brought into the club in 2012 for £1.5 million, Bamford had two fantastic campaigns on loan in the Championship where he scored 18 and 17 goals in successive seasons for the MK Dons and Middlesbrough respectively.
Currently on loan at London rivals Crystal Palace, and given Chelsea’s striking woes this season following Diego Costa’s fall from grace, Chelsea could benefit greatly from his presence.
#2 Juan Cuadrado
After a very impressive season with Fiorentina, Cuadrado was brought into Chelsea to provide them with more guile while pushing ahead last year. Unfortunately, the Colombian never settled in and managed only 15 appearances for the Blues last season.
Even though, he may have failed during his first spell with the Blues, the Colombian was brought in for a reason – for his talent with the ball and as the much-quoted adage “form is temporary, class is permanent” goes, the Colombian is still one of the most talented wingers in football today.
Currently on loan at Juventus, the Colombian is still a much-desired property in the footballing world as his outright pace and penchant for the spectacular are two things every club desires in a player, none more so than Chelsea at the moment.
#1 Mohamed Salah
When Mohamed Salah arrived from FC Basel in 2014, much was expected from the Egyptian winger. However, under Jose Mourinho he rarely got a chance to play and even when he did, he failed to impress. As a result, he was shipped off to Fiorentina last year and enjoyed a fantastic campaign where he scored 6 goals in 16 appearances in the Serie A.
Normally any other club would have either held on to the player following such a campaign or pushed for a good sell. But the Egyptian didn’t get either of those options and was loaned out to Roma again this year.
His pace and eye for goal would be vital to Chelsea at this moment when goals have been hard to come by and judging from his 6 goals in 14 starts for Roma this year, he’s definitely not out of touch.
