It seems that plan B or plan C for Jose Mourinho could be former Barcelona man Samuel Eto who he managed at Inter Milan.
Rumours are that we are interested in Eto’o and could offer him a one year contract as the Anzhi exodus gets into full swing.
Due to his reputation and undoubted talent I am excited that he could play for Chelsea but torn as to whether in the long term this would be a good move?
We have a history of shunning players aged over 30 and at 32 years of age he would only be a short term solution. That being said he may have a couple of seasons of top level football left in him.
With Mourinho charged with planning for the future, this would feel like a slight step backwards on the development spectrum and send a negative message to players like Romelu Lukaku.
Buying players in their twilight can be hit or miss but Chelsea have a good history with players like Gianfranco Zola and Mark Hughes becoming key parts of the team despite joining after the age of 30.
This move would be a one year sticking plaster to buy the club another window to land a big name in next summer’s window and consolation for the Rooney deal falling through.
His signing would probably spell the end for Demba Ba and raise questions as to the role of Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku, would he start ahead of them or act in a supporting role?
That being said Eto’o is a class player and I would welcome him to the club but its all just speculation and it looks like it will be an interesting last week to the window.
