Former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro set to step away from football

Eva Carneiro is set to step away from football seven months after her public dispute with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

Former Chelsea club doctor Eva Carneiro will return to work for the first time this week since a public dispute with Jose Mourinho resulted in her exit from the club. Now seven months on, the Gibraltar-born doctor looks set to step away from football entirely after her new employer, Specialist Medical Clinic, announced her appointment via Facebook on Wednesday.

The Facebook post reads:

“Gibraltarian Sports Physician Doctor, Eva Carneiro (formerly of Chelsea Football Club, Olympic Medical Institute, and England's Women Football) will be working at the Specialist Medical clinic on Thursday 31st March.”

“As Sports Medicine and Exercise Medicine Consultant, Doctor Eva specialises in the treatment of athletes and other physically active individuals. Sports and Exercise medicine physicians have extensive education in musculoskeletal medicine. She is able to treat injuries such as muscle, ligament, tendon and bone problems, but may also treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance, such as asthma and diabetes.

“Dr Carneiro will also advise on managing and preventing injuries, Sports and exercise nutrition, supplementation and performance enhancement.”

Carneiro, 42, remains locked in a legal dispute with Chelsea after Mourinho publicly criticised her and club physio Jon Fearn for entering the field of play during added time to treat an injured Eden Hazard.

Tied at 2-2 with Swansea on the opening day of the Premier League, Mourinho said the pair were “impulsive and naive” for running onto the field to treat the seemingly injured Hazard. The Portuguese manager said the two should have taken into account that the team would be left to play out the remainder of the game with just nine men, despite the fact the pair were waved onto the field by the referee.

“I wasn’t happy with my medical staff because even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game,” he said. “You have to know that you have one player less and if you go to the pitch to assist a player then you must be sure that a player has a serious problem.

“I was sure that Eden didn’t have a serious problem. He had a knock and was very tired. My medical department left me with eight fit (outfield) players in a counterattack after a set piece and we were worried we didn’t have enough players left.”

The incident saw Carneiro and Fearn dropped from the Chelsea first team bench, which resulted in Carneiro leaving the club and filing a claim against Chelsea for constructive dismissal. She has since launched personal legal action against Mourinho, claiming alleged victimisation and discrimination. Carneiro’s lawyer say’s they will be seeking a public apology from Jose Mourinho as part of any settlement in her employment case, which is expected to go to a full employment tribunal after lawyers failed to reach an agreement after a six-hour talk in London.
