Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian club Gremio has announced the signing of former Liverpool and Valencia defender Fabio Aurelio.

Aurelio was released by Liverpool earlier this month after six seasons and 87 first-team appearances with the English Premier League club.

He also spent six years at Valencia having joined the Spanish outfit from Sao Paulo in September 2000.

Gremio confirmed the deal on its website Friday. “We confirm the agreement with defender Fabio Aurelio extends to December 31, 2013,” the club said.

The move reunites Aurelio with former Brazil manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who coached Aurelio at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The 32-year-old will fill Gremio’s problematic left-back role made vacant by a long-term injury to Julio Cesar.

He is the club’s 17th new signing this season after Kleber, Marcelo Moreno, Leo Gago and Souza, among others, also joined the Porto Alegre outfit.

He will not be eligible to play until the beginning of Brazil’s international transfer window June 20.
