Former Manchester United player Brian Greenhoff dies, aged 60

Brian Greenhoff - Manchester United

Former England and Manchester United and defender, Brian Greenhoff, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 60. The grandfather of three was born in Barnsley and played for United for 6 years. He also won a second division winners’ medal for the Old Trafford club in 1975.

He had made a total of 271 appearances and scored 17 goals during his time at United. He also had won 18 caps playing for England.

Shocked by the news of his sudden demise, former Manchester United teammate Lou Macari spoke to BBC Radio Manchester. He said, “We had no news that Brian had been ill, Brian loved playing for United, it was a dream come true for him. His only aim was to keep playing for United as long as he could and he was a true servant.”

Greater Manchester Police have not found any suspicious circumstances thus far. “Shortly after 9.30am today, police were called to an address in Norden following a report of a sudden death. Officers attended and found that a man, believed to be 60, died suddenly,” a police spokeswoman said.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and the matter has been referred to the coroner,” she added.
