The Football Players Association of India (FPAI) organised a memorial match in the name of their former employee, the late Debanjan Sen at the CC&FC Ground on Thursday. Debanjan died in an motorbike accident last year at the age of only 22.
A star-studded FPAI XI took on CC&FC in the Debanjan Sen Memorial Cup 2012, and they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Kolkatans. The CC&FC XI was led by former India skipper and FPAI President Baichung Bhutia, while FPAI General Secretary Jahan Mehta was also part of the Kolkata-side. The FPAI XI opened the score sheet through Dipendu Biswas in the 20th minute, while Jahan Mehta leveled the score just one minute later.
Various Indian star players such as Gouramangi Moirangthem Singh, Syed Rahim Nabi and Subrata Pal took part in the charity match, while Costa Rican World Cuppers Steven Bryce and Carlos Hernández Valverde were also part of the Debanjan Sen Memorial Cup 2012.
Meanwhile, Indian football fans will get a chance to see Valverde in I-League action as the seasoned Costa Rican international signed a deal with Kolkata’s Prayag United on Wednesday.
