France 0 (5) - Portugal (3) - France Player Ratings as Les Bleus hold nerve in shootout to advance to semis | Euro 2024

Portugal v France: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024
Portugal v France: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024

France were perfect from the spot, converting all five of their kicks to get past Portugal in their quarterfinal clash in Euro 2024 on Friday, July 5.

Coming into the game, Didier Deschamps made two changes from the side that beat Belgium 1-0. Eduardo Camavinga stepped in for Adrien Rabiot in midfield while Randal Kolo Muani replaced Marcus Thuram in attack. Portugal, meanwhile, named an unchanged lineup from their Round of 16 win over Slovenia where they needed penalties to advance.

It was a dull first half with neither team able to create proper chances. Portugal had a slight edge in possession (56%) but failed to test Mike Maignan in the French goal. Les Bleus were also equally toothless going forward.

The Selecao began the second period strongly and Bruno Fernandes had a great opportunity to take the lead but was denied by Maignan. Vitinha also forced the AC Milan keeper into a save as Roberto Martinez's men looked to seize control.

At the other end, France also had some chances of their own as Kolo Muani had a close effort blocked by Ruben Dias while Camavinga missed from close range.

The game headed to extra time as neither side was able to open the deadlock. The timid and cautious approach going forward from both sides continued as they were content to hold on to the ball without creating any chances.

As it headed to the shootout, France's takers Ousmane Dembele, Youssouf Fofana, Jules Kounde, Bradley Barcola and Theo Hernandez all converted. Meanwhile, for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva and Nuno Mendes scored while Joao Felix hit the post.

The win means France will advance to the semis, where they will face Spain who beat Germany earlier today. Here are their player ratings:

France Players Ratings

Mike Maignan - 7/10

It was a great performance from Maignan between the sticks who had to stay alert to make a couple good saves in the second half. Overall, he finished the game with four saves.

Jules Kounde - 7/10

The Barcelona defender had a solid outing. He dealt well with the threat of Rafael Leao and offered some threat going forward, finishing with one chance created and five passes into the final third.

Dayot Upamecano - 6.5/10

Upamecano had a decent performance at the heart of France's defence. He helped Kounde out with the task of defending Leao and was solid overall.

William Saliba - 7/10

Arguably the side's best defender on the night, the Arsenal man cut an imposing and calm figure.

Theo Hernandez - 6/10

He looked to combine with Mbappe down the left but could not provide the killer pass. Defensively, he was solid, dealing well with Bernardo Silva.

Aurelien Tchouameni - 6.5/10

The Real Madrid midfielder enjoyed a good first half where he had a lot of touches and looked to begin attacking sequences by finding his midfielders. He was a little less careful with the ball in the second period.

Eduardo Camavinga - 6/10

Camavinga was full of energy but missed arguably the biggest chance of the game, putting wide an effort from close range where he should have hit the target.

N'Golo Kante - 6.5/10

The usual energetic outing from the former Chelsea star and was composed on the ball, completing 91% (64/70) of his passes.

Antoine Griezmann - 5/10

Griezmann continues to have a difficult tournament where his role has been changed almost every game. He has been played as a number 10 as well as on the right wing but has struggled to have an impact. Against Portugal he was deployed behind Mbappe and Kolo Muani but barely had an effect before being taken off after the hour mark.

Kylian Mbappe - 5/10

The nose injury seems to be affecting the Real Madrid superstar who did not look particularly threatening in the game. He finished with five shots (two on target) and just six touches in Portugal's box.

Randal Kolo Muani - 5.5/10

After a decent cameo against Belgium where his shot led to the winning goal, Kolo Muani was given the start ahead of Marcus Thuram. However, he struggled to have an impact.

Substitutes

Ousmane Dembele - 7/10

Coming on for Griezmann, his introduction saw France change to a seemingly more conventional 4-3-3. He had some good moments down the right, finishing with six chances created, six dribbles completed and two accurate crosses.

Marcus Thuram - 5.5/10

He came on for Kolo Muani but was not really an upgrade as he struggled to make a difference.

Youssouf Fofana - 6/10

He replaced Camavinga after 90 minutes and looked solid, showing great composure to convert from the spot.

Bradley Barcola - 6/10

The youngster had a decent 15 minutes of action before scoring from the spot for France.
