Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that ex-Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard would be joining the Premier League champions on loan until January.
Lampard was released by Chelsea at the end of the 2013/14 season and joined New York City FC, a new club jointly owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees. But they don’t kick off their first season until March 2015.
Pellegrini said: “From next week, Wednesday, he will start working with our team and he will be with us until January,”
“He is working with the squad. He will fight for his position.”
Lampard will play in the Premier League and Champions League
The club plan to register him in both the EPL and Champions League squads.
Pellegrini added: “He knows we have a very good team, we have a lot of players in his position. He is one player more,”
“We have a lot of games particularly with the Champions League - so he's very important for our team.”
Will he play against Chelsea?
There were reports stating that Lampard had requested that he should not be picked to play against former club Chelsea.
But Pellegrini has had the last word, saying: “He is a player for Manchester City and he will play every game he needs to play.” The Blues take on Man City at the Etihad Stadium on September 21.
Lampard will not be the first player to spend the MLS off-season on loan with a Premier League club. Players like Thierry Henry (Arsenal), Clint Dempsey (Fulham) and Robbie Keane (Aston Villa) have all played a few games in the EPL during the off-season in the US.
