Time moves steadily but elapses quickly. It was the late nineties when the likes of Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham were known to be the most dominant midfielders of that era. At the same time in the Netherlands, a child named Frenkie de Jong was born, unaware of the beautiful game, unaware of what liec ahead in his future. Two decades from then, the boy would be known as the hottest midfield prospect in world football, recently signing a deal with Spanish giants, FC Barcelona.
Even before spending a full season with the first team in Ajax, the Dutch prodigy was making it big into the headlines, with scouts from European elites eyeing a move for the future of football.
The 21-year-old is a complete midfield package comprised of craft, exceptional dribbling, passing skills, excellent decision-making, acceleration, and control, making him a perfect fit for FC Barcelona's playing style, dominated by the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, and Sergio Busquets over the past decade. The Dutchman is believed to be the long-term replacement for the latter.
Playing as a central midfielder for the Ajax side, de Jong scored six goals and set up another ten in just 66 first-team appearances. Apart from a bagful of skills separating him from the rest, the Dutch prodigy is a versatile player, with the defensive midfield and the heart of the defence, amongst his other preferable positions.
The Ajax prodigy has already made five appearances for the Dutch side, under Ronald Koeman. The Dutch tactician, when asked about de Jong's quality, replied, "His biggest quality? In a lot of situations he has the ability to postpone the decision when in possession, and then to give a pass from which everyone thinks: 'Hell yeah, excellent thinking, that's how simple it can be'. His view of the game is exceptional."
The Spanish giants have splashed 65 million to secure the services of the Dutch prodigy. However, they must wait until the summer for his arrival in the Camp Nou.
Frenkie de Jong has been the centre of attraction across Europe since breaking out in the first-tier football. Now, he is believed to be a future global star as soon as he joins the Catalans. Speaking on the signing of the Dutchman, FC Barcelona's boss, Ernesto Valverde said:
"He's a really exciting signing for the club, both in terms of the present and the future. He's a great player with a really, really big future in front of him. We are hoping for the best for him because his success will be the club's too. He's a great signing, a really great acquisition."
Frenkie de Jong's arrival has not only got the football fans around the world excited but also, announced a potential threat for the oppositions, in the future. The Dutch playmaker requires a second to turn a defensive situation into a counter attack, and a blink of an eye to change the outcomes of the game.
