Richard Helmersen wouldn't have even thought in his wildest of dreams that he would pocket more than €2000 after winning a bet that Uruguay Striker Luis Suarez would bite someone during the tournament.
The Norwegian gambler placed almost 12 Norwegian Kroner (€12) for the bet with stakes at 175/1.
The Liverpool striker didn’t disappoint as Suarez appeared to bite Italian defender Girgio Chiellini on his shoulder during Italy’ final group stage match against Uruguay which ended with the South Americans advancing to the next round after they won the game 1-0.
Helmersen couldn't believe his luck after winning the bet.
“It’s really quite surreal. I sit the course to watching the game and when it happens it starts to tick the messages from buddies who knew I’d put money on it. It’s quite fun. I started the only laugh. I thought, is he really so stupid that he does it again?’ said Helmersen.
“It was mostly for fun. But I knew that they were playing against Italy and England and it soon could be irritably”, added the punter.
But if you think that Helmersen was the only person to benefit from Suarez’s act then you are wrong for at least some 100 gamblers in Scandanavia went home with few pounds extra in their pockets.
Betsafe, an online booking company, invited more than 100 gamblers to bet their money on Suarez’s soon to be committed act and it was just matter of time before the gamblers who risked their money went back home happy.
Jonathan Braek placed a bet of 80 Swedish kroner (£7) and went on to win 14,000 kroner (£1,225) and thanked Suarez for helping him.
“If I had [Suárez’s] home address I’d send him a ‘thank you’ card. It was very nice of him to bite and give me a trip to Manchester,” said Braek who plans to watch a match in Manchester when the EPL season starts.
“First I thought I’d bet a little more, but a friend said I was just wasting my money,” a delighted Braeck told the SportsExpressen newspaper. “When Italy took over the game you knew that he could go a little crazy,” he added. “I didn’t think that he would bite, but that he’d do something stupid. Then he did the best stupid thing that he could do.”
Betsafe’s marketing manager Patrik Oqvist told the newspaper that Braek has won 14,000 Kroner after placing his bet that Suarez would bite someone during the tournament. “We can gladly confirm that our customer won 14,000 Kroner because Suárez remarkably bit an opponent – again.”
“We had fun setting these strange odds and it’s very nice that a customer got it right” added Oqvist.
Luis Suarez faces a lengthy ban from playing further in the tournament if he is found guilty of biting Chiellini.
