Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale has poured cold water on reports that he doesn’t shared a good relationship with teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, stating that he gets on well with the former Manchester United man. Bale also said that they’ve never had a problem ever and are only focused on winning trophies.
Speaking to The Times, the Welshman also talked about how Cristiano Ronaldo helped him when he had signed for Real Madrid in 2013, and that the Galacticos follow an interesting method to decide who takes free-kicks during matches.
Speaking after his starring role in Real Madrid’s 3-2 comeback win over Rayo Vallecano on the weekend, when asked about how his relationship with Ronaldo was, the 26-year-old said, “He speaks English which helped me when I first came here. We also have that link from the Premier League. We get on really well. The press make a lot of things that maybe we don’t but we get on fine. We’ve never had a problem.”
He went on to add, "I’ve never had an argument with him. He’s a very, very passionate person on the pitch — everyone knows that. He’s very determined. People sometimes seem to take that the wrong way. We haven’t had a problem.”
“You definitely have to have teamwork. No one can ever do anything on their own. But you need a little bit of selfishness because that’s what you need as a front man. We’ve found a good balance. We’re doing well, scoring a lot of goals, and hopefully we can peak now towards the end of the season and get some trophies.”
Bale and Ronaldo’s special setpiece agreement
Though Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo are Real Madrid’s biggest players, the Portuguese international still gets to take most of the free-kicks, ahead of the man from Wales, despite his not so good record from deadball situations in the last year or so.
When asked about their free-kick arrangements, Bale laughed and said, “It’s on the board: free kicks left side him, free kicks right side me. Every game. So we know exactly what’s what.”
The aggresive winger has played only 21 games this season, as he has been injured multiple times, and yet has been able to contribute very effectively, scoring 18 goals and providing 10 assists. Though Real did not have a good start to the season, leading to the sacking of Rafa Benitez, their form under Zinedine Zidane has been very good, as they have clawed themselves back into the title race and are in the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they face Manchester City.
