Gareth Bale has been in amazing form off late for Spurs, and it’s little surprise that comparisons are in full flow, with talks about similarities between him and the likes of Ronaldo and Messi. This article will discuss if Bale is actually the Premier league’s best player, or if it exaggerated to call him that.
Bale has scored fifteen in the league so far, and eight in his last six, including some fantastic individual goals, not to forget a hattrick against Villa during the Christmas period. Bale first made me take notice after he toyed with Inter Milan‘s Maicon, who has been good enough to keep Dani Alves out of the Brazilan starting eleven. The wing wizard also scored a 90th minute stunner against West Ham a few days ago, which won the match for the Spurs.
It’s quite incredible now to recall that Bale started out as a pacy left-back who used to struggle defensively, and for me, his shifting further up the pitch has been very crucial in defining what he is today. He toys with opposition full-backs, crosses, scores goals and stuns everyone with his sheer pace. His finishing has vastly improved, he is technically outstanding, and his temperament is good to see.
But is he the Premier League’s best player? RVP, Suarez, Mata, Yaya Toure and Wayne Rooney will all have something to say about that. Some of these players are strikers and have scored more than Bale, while some like Mata and Rooney decide to drop deep and dictate play, and have the passing skills to accomplish that. Then there is Toure, who reminds me very much of no one, but impresses me very much with his strength and ability to win games.
So where does Bale stand? For me, RVP and Toure are better than him, simply because they have been winning games for their clubs consistently, are have led their clubs to titles in the last few years. Bale is surely better than the other three, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he races ahead of RVP and Toure in the next one or two seasons. But until then, he needs to keeping toying with defenders.
