Real Madrid fans have not been impressed with Bale's performances in the last few weeks

What's the story?

The future of Gareth Bale was subject to intense speculation during the transfer window with many reports linking him with a big money move to Premier League giants Manchester United. However, the Welsh winger has now explained why he chose to stay at Real Madrid instead of moving to Old Trafford saying that winning trophies was more important to him than being the main man.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Bale, when asked if it was worth being the main man in return for lesser trophies said:

"Well there’s an argument for that, But I think the main thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies. In the end that’s probably the most important thing."

His form has led to some critics stating that he should be dropped from the starting XI, but the Welsh winger said that he did not pay attention to such criticism.

"I don’t really look into things like that. Some people do, some don’t. I’m not too bothered.

"I just want to go out on to the football pitch and enjoy my football. I want to do well for myself but I also want to try to help the team and win trophies. Just try to enjoy myself I think. That’s the main thing."

In case you didn't know...

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was reportedly extremely interested in signing Bale this summer, but the Welsh winger himself insisted on staying at Real Madrid and helping the team win trophies.

Neymar, on the other hand, chose to go to PSG in order to escape the shadow of Messi and become the main man and only time will tell whether it was a wise decision by the Brazilian.

The heart of the matter

Bale, at his best, is undoubtedly among the best players of this generation.

Author's take

While Gareth Bale would undoubtedly move out of the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United, Real Madrid is the best team in world football at the moment and the Welsh winger did well to stay at Los Blancos and fight for recognition and trophies this season.

However, a move to Manchester United in the future does not seem too unlikely for the 3-time Champions League winner.
