Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that manager David Moyes needs to field a team with plenty of pace if the Red Devils are to stifle Bayern Munich’s attack, report Sky Sports.
The reigning European champions travel to Old Trafford on Tuesday night for the first leg of the highly anticipated Champions League quarter-final to take on a depleted United side.
With first choice full-backs Patrice Evra and Rafael suspended and doubtful respectively, Neville is wary of how the deputes will cope in their absence. The Bavarians have an unrivaled assembly of attacking talent that will be relishing the opportunity to get at an unfamiliar defensive unit.
“You look at Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos.
“Robben will be up against Buttner who’s not played a lot of football. Robben has spoken this week in the press about how he fancies this game – and you can see why,” Neville claimed.
However, the flanks are not Moyes’ only concern, with the usually solid partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand susceptible to errors on the big occasion at present.
Neville is adamant that the Scot should pack his own attack with pace to help his weakened back four when Bayern have control of possession and break quickly when the ball is won.
“Vidic and Ferdinand haven’t played too many games together. They played away in Olympiakos and it was difficult for them.
“Can they push up the pitch? It would be difficult for Rio and Nemanja to push up and leave the space behind for Ribery and Robben.
“They are going to have to have depth in the game and probably counter-attack on them, which means the likes of Antonio Valencia, Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Rooney – the people who are mobile and can get from box-to-box quickly – are the types you would want to play with the back four that United are going to have out,” he insisted.
Such has been their decline this season, United are huge underdogs for the tie and will need to be on top form just to ensure they are still in with a chance of progression when they travel to Germany for the return leg.
Bayern Munich have not failed to score in any of their eight Champions League games this season.
