Georgia meet Portugal at the Arena AufSchalke (Veltins-Arena) in their final group-stage game of UEFA Euro 2024 on Wednesday (June 26). The 2016 champions have booked their place in the knockouts as the Group F table-toppers. For Georgia, this is a must-win game.
Georgia suffered a 3-1 loss to Turkey in their campaign opener before drawing 1-1 with the Czech Republic last week. Georges Mikautadze scored in both games.
Portugal, meanwhile, had a narrow 2-1 win over the Czech Republic before beating Turkey 3-0 last week. An own goal helped them for the second straight game while Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes also scored.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the top scorer in European Championship history, is yet to open his account but provided a selfless assist to Fernandes when he looked good to score himself. Ronaldo is now level with Czech Republic legend Karel Poborsky (eight) for most assists at the Euros.
Georgia vs Portugal Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- In their lone meeting in a friendly in 2008, the 2016 champions won 2-0, with Ronaldo and Pepe starting.
- Georgia have had a decent European Championship debut, scoring in each game in two outings.
- Portugal have the second-best attacking record at Euro 2024 after two games, scoring five goals, three fewer than hosts Germany.
- Portugal kept their first clean sheet in the European Championship in five games last week.
Georgia vs Portugal Prediction
Georgia need a win to stay in contention for the knockouts, so boss Willy Sagnol is likely to stick with a similar starting XI which earned them a historic point at a major international tournament last time out.
Portugal, meanwhile, have nothing left to play, having already won the group. Manager Roberto Martinez is certain to make a few changes. But one confirmed absentee is Rafael Leao, who will serve a suspension after picking up his second booking of the competition last week.
Nevertheless, the 2016 champions' superior squad depth should see them eke out a narrow win.
Prediction: Georgia 1-2 Portugal
