Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has confirmed that he is in talks with the club hierarchy over a new contract with two years left to run on his current deal.
The Spaniard admitted that negotiations had begun and claimed that he could not play anywhere else other than his home-town club, after an unsuccessful spell with Manchester United.
“We have started [contract talks], yes,” Pique told Mundo Deportivo. ”Everything is very well with the club. Everyone knows that I am a Barcelonista.”
Pique was brought through the ranks at La Masia, Barcelona’s youth academy, but elected to sign a professional contract with Manchester United in 2004, spending four years in the Premier League before returning home to Catalonia in 2008.
“I tried having an adventure abroad with Manchester, and I can say that there is no place like home,” Pique added. “I spent four years away, but here I have family and close friends every day.”
The centre-back has been a regular in Barcelona’s defence this season alongside Javier Mascherano under new boss Tata Martino, with an average pass accuracy of 92%.
